FEDERAL FUNDING

What is federal funding?

Federal funding is financial assistance that students may receive if they are eligible. To apply for the various types of federal funding, students must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application at www.fafsa.gov.  This application allows students to apply for all of the available federal funding opportunities such as, grants, work study, loans, aid for military families and the FSEOG Grant. Information regarding the various types of federal funding are listed below.


Grants

Grants are a type of financial aid awarded by the federal government to students that meet certain requirements, which do not have to be repaid unless you do not fulfill the federal requirements. The primary grant that students receive is called the Pell Grant.

Work Study

The federal work study program assist students by allowing them to work part-time on campuses while attending school. For many students it assist them with paying for their education. However, you must be eligible to receive the Pell Grant to be approved for work study.

Loans

A loan is funds that students borrow and must repay with interest. When students apply for federal aid, they are sometimes offered loans to assist with paying for their education. The U.S. Department of Education offers several types of loans that students can apply for such as, the direct loans and Health Education Assistance Loan, and the Federal Perkins Loan. 


  1. Direct Subsidized - available to eligible undergraduate
  2. Direct Unsubsidized - available to undergraduates, graduate and professional students that is based on the need of the student
  3. Direct Plus - available to graduate or professional students and parents of undergraduates with the utilization of credit history
  4. Direct Consolidation - allows students to combine all federal loans into one single loan with one one loan servicer
  5. Health Education Assistance - This loan was discontinued on September 30, 1998. Previously serviced by he HEAL Program but currently being serviced through the U.S. Department of Education.
  6. Federal Perkins - A financial need based loan. This loan was discontinued on September 30, 2017.

Aid for Military Families

The federal government alone with many other organizations offers money to Veterans, active duty personnel, future military personnel, as well as their family to attend college. Some of the financial aid sources are the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) Scholarship, Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Education Benefits, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant. Additional assistance may be obtained through the American Legion, AMVETS, Paralyzed Veterans of American and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. FSEOG

FSEOG (Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant) is a federal grant for undergraduate students. The funding is awarded to students with a financial need. The funding does not require repayment and the amounts range from $100 - $4,000 per student. There is no special application for students to complete for this grant. Students are automatically considered according to their FAFSA application.

STATE FUNDING

What is state funding?

State funding is available funds for eligible students within the state. These funds assist with reducing the tuition cost for students. To apply for funding, some students must complete the FAFSA application, while others may have to complete an additional application.

Bright Futures Scholarship

The Bright Futures Scholarship is a program that was established in 1997 to assist Florida high school graduates. There are four types of scholarships available through the lottery-funded program. They are the Florida Academic Scholars (FAS), Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS), Gold Seal Vocational Scholars (GSV), and the Gold Seal CAPE Scholars (GSC). Teach Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant is a federal grant that provides funding to those desiring to teach education and willing to do so in elementary or secondary schools for four years . First Generation Matching Grant

This need-based grant is available to first generation degree-seeking, undergraduate and resident students enrolled at a postsecondary institution that that is eligible to participate in the program. Those eligible for the grant have a parent (s) who does not have neither a baccalaureate nor higher degree. The First Generation Matching Grant is a Florida resident only grant and students must meet the following requirements:

1.  Not be in default or owe a repayment 

2.  Not have a baccalaureate degree

3.  Be accepted and enrolled at a Florida state or public institution for the minimum 6 credit hours seeking a degree

4. Be a first generation student in college

5.  Have met the Florida Statute for financial need and the institution's eligibility requirements


1st Generation Grant

FSAG

The FSAG (Florida Student Assistance Grant) program is a state funded grant that students may be awarded. The grant is awarded to students which demonstrate a substantial financial need. Students must be residents of the State of Florida, a degree-seeking undergraduate and enrolled in a post-secondary institution. The FAFSA application is utilized to determine eligibility and if the institution's eligibility criteria are continuously met, the grant will be renewed for the following terms.
